Buda Castle

Buda Castle is a giant structure built as a palace for the royalty in the 14th century. This site atop Buda mount also contains a number of historic residential and government buildings.

The view is something.

There are three ways to get to Buda Castle from the Chain Bridge. Walk up about 500 vertical feet on endless flights of stairs; take the Castle Hill Funicular, built in 1928; or take a city bus. We tried the funicular and bus options for our two visits. The bus stop is in a neat village just behind us in this photo. The short walk is interesting. Ancient Roman ruins on the right, and the Presidential Palace on the left.

When we reach this courtyard at the end of the Presidential Palace on the left, we can see the top of the funicular in the glass building center left, and the gate to the Castle grounds on the right.

The west side of the castle has lots of neat features including this fountain.

The front side on the east contains a very long roadway for pedestrians to wander, enjoying the views and several restaurants/bars. A glass of wine is always a good idea.

The main front entrance to the Castle is to the right, behind the tail of the horse.

This front entrance is the way to enter the Hungarian National Gallery, a must-see.
